Taxonomic Research

While some projects require only a simple list of species names, others assemble comprehensive details about each name as required for different types of research publication. In this respect, BRAHMS manages all details of nomenclature for taxonomic research from kingdom to cultivar. The ability to select, format and publish taxonomic information for different purposes, including online, is a key BRAHMS priority.

Key features

  • Names can be stored at all taxon levels for botanists and zoologists. The key ICN and ICNCP ranks are available by default. If a rank is not included as a default field, you can extend your database structure by adding custom fields to any of the taxon tables.
  • Add names directly to BRAHMS or assemble and import from external Rapid Data Entry (RDE) files. The RDE module is used to capture new data or to transfer data from other formats such as Excel worksheets.
  • Add and edit names using data grid or dockable forms which provide instant summary access to lists of synonyms and common names, collection data (specimens, plants, seed), text descriptions and more...
  • Connect BRAHMS to external websites to check names, locate literature and images.
  • Format names to publication level for different styles of reports, journals, floras and monograph series.
  • Link images directly to any taxon record.
  • Assign conservation status to names (Red List, Star or your own conservation coding and use these to calculate bio-quality of selected regions.
  • Store distribution and range of taxa as a verbal summary or calculate this based on linked, geo-referenced vouchers.
  • Upload taxa to your own website directly from BRAHMS using BRAHMS WebConnect.
